About —
The name Kishida is a nod to Doug Johnson's mom, Takako & his Japanese heritage. The band members have been together since the late 90s, transforming many times over the years. Doug and Matt McKenny had been in a band called Vine, playing instrumental originals & covers of bands like the Meters in places like Savannah, Athens, and Atlanta alongside Josh Safer & Marco Diaz. When Marco moved home to NYC, Jeremy Wilhelm stepped in on Bass & the moniker of Old School Dropouts was briefly adopted to cover the new concept. Whereas Vine had incorporated plenty of improvisation, the idea for OSD was perhaps bolder: make it all up on the spot and root the whole thing in groove above everything. Kishida is a mix of Vine & OSD, paired down to a trio with sets built on musical "stems" or starting points. Your guess as to where the tune is going may be as good as theirs!
